When an AC compressor is not working in Dubai, check the cooling settings first and stop using the AC if there is a burning smell or repeated breaker tripping. Warm air alone cannot confirm compressor failure: power, controls and airflow faults can produce similar symptoms.
This guide helps Dubai tenants, villa and apartment owners, and property managers decide what to record before a callout and what evidence to request before approving a repair. Tenants should check maintenance responsibility with their landlord or building team first.
What Are the Signs of a Compressor Problem?
Warm air, an outdoor unit that will not start, repeated clicking or breaker trips can indicate a compressor-related fault. None confirms a failed compressor without testing.
- The indoor unit runs but the air is warm. The fan works, but there is no cooling. Read our guide on AC blowing warm air for related causes.
- The outdoor unit is silent, or only the outdoor fan spins while the compressor stays quiet.
- A humming or clicking sound from the outdoor unit, then nothing. This usually means the compressor is trying to start and cannot.
- The breaker trips a few seconds after the AC turns on.
- The compressor starts, then cuts out after a few minutes, again and again.
- A burning smell or smoke: stop using the AC, keep clear and seek urgent help. Do not touch the outdoor unit to test its temperature.
Why Will the Compressor Not Start?
Possible causes include a failed capacitor on a non-inverter system, a faulty contactor, interrupted power, overheating, a refrigerant fault, an outdoor fan fault or a control-board problem. A technician needs to distinguish these from internal compressor damage.
1. Failed start or run capacitor
On systems that use a compressor capacitor, a failed capacitor can prevent starting or running. Humming is a clue, not proof. Inverter compressors use a different drive arrangement, so a capacitor replacement is not a universal fix.
2. Faulty contactor or relay
The contactor is the switch that sends power to the compressor. Burnt contacts or a stuck relay mean the compressor never receives power, even though the indoor unit asks for cooling.
3. Tripped breaker or power supply problem
A weak or tripping breaker, loose wiring or low voltage can stop the compressor. If the breaker trips every time, do not keep resetting it. That points to an electrical fault, and our electrician team in Dubai can check the supply safely.
4. Overheating from a dirty outdoor coil
A dirty outdoor coil reduces heat transfer and can contribute to overheating. The U.S. Department of Energy air conditioner maintenance guide explains why coils and airflow need attention. A technician can assess whether AC coil cleaning addresses the fault.
5. Low refrigerant gas
A gas leak causes low pressure, and many units protect the compressor by shutting it down. Topping up without fixing the leak only delays the problem. See our AC gas refilling cost guide.
6. Outdoor fan motor failure
If the outdoor fan stops, heat builds up within minutes and the compressor trips on overload. A dead fan motor is often mistaken for a dead compressor.
7. PCB or inverter board fault
Inverter ACs use a control board to drive the compressor. A failed board, often after a power surge, stops the compressor completely and may show an error code on the indoor display.
Internal compressor damage also needs direct evidence, not just elimination of other causes. Ask for the relevant electrical test results and the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure before approving replacement.
What Can You Safely Check Before Calling?
Check Cool mode, the temperature setting, accessible filters and visible obstructions from a safe position. Record noises and error codes without opening covers or reaching into the unit.
- Check the thermostat. Make sure the mode is Cool, not Fan or Dry, and the set temperature is below room temperature.
- Observe the breaker status. If it has tripped, leave the AC off and contact building maintenance or a technician; do not repeatedly reset it.
- Clean or check the filter. A blocked filter can freeze the coil and stop cooling. Our filter cleaning guide shows how.
- Look at the outdoor unit. Is the fan spinning? Is the coil covered in dust, or blocked by boxes or plants?
- Wait 5 to 10 minutes. After a power cut, many units have a built-in delay before the compressor restarts.
Do not open the outdoor unit, touch capacitors (they hold a charge even when switched off) or try to handle refrigerant. In the UAE, refrigerant work needs a trained technician with the right equipment.
